How sizing works

The arithmetic nobody shows you

A softener is sized by how many grains of hardness it can remove before it has to regenerate. Get that wrong in either direction and you pay for it — in salt, in water, or in a valve that fails early.

How ion exchange works: hard water carrying calcium and magnesium enters a tank of resin beads, the beads hold the calcium and magnesium and release sodium, and softened water leaves. What a softener actually does: the resin beads hold on to the calcium and magnesium and let go of sodium in exchange. That is the whole mechanism — and it is why softening adds sodium, and why it does nothing at all for taste.

1. Daily demand

About 75 gallons per person per day. Four people is 300 gallons.

2. Times hardness

300 gallons at 14 grains is 4,200 grains of hardness removed every day.

3. Divide by regeneration

Aim for roughly weekly. 4,200 × 7 is 29,400 — so a 32,000-grain unit.

Undersized is the common mistake, and oversized is the expensive one. Too small and it regenerates nightly, which burns salt and water and wears the valve out. Too big and the resin sits idle between cycles. Neither shows up for a year, which is why it is easy to sell you the wrong one.

A softener removes hardness. A conditioner leaves hardness in and tries to stop it sticking. Reverse osmosis is about taste at one tap. If someone offers you one as a substitute for another, that is the moment to ask which of these three it really is.

Questions we get asked before anyone buys

How hard is Phoenix water, really?

The City of Phoenix 2025 Water Quality Report puts total hardness at 172 to 302 ppm, which is 10 to 17.6 grains per gallon. On the classification the water-treatment industry uses, anything above 10.5 grains is “very hard” — so Phoenix runs from the top of hard into very hard, depending on where and when you measure.

Will a softener make my water taste better?

Probably not, and anyone who promises it is selling you the wrong box. A softener exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium; it is not a filter and it is not aimed at taste. If taste is the problem you want reverse osmosis at the sink. Many homes end up with both, for different reasons.

Does softening add salt to my water?

It adds sodium, in proportion to the hardness removed. That is worth knowing up front: Phoenix water already carries 91 to 183 ppm of sodium before any treatment, per the same city report. If someone in the house is on a sodium-restricted diet, say so and we will talk about potassium chloride or a separate unsoftened tap.

What size do I need?

Work it out rather than guess: about 75 gallons per person per day, times your hardness in grains, gives grains removed per day. Size the resin so it regenerates roughly weekly. Four people at 14 grains is 4,200 grains a day, so a 32,000-grain unit. Our quote tool does this arithmetic in front of you.

Is a bigger softener always better?

No. Oversize it and the resin sits unused between regenerations, which is its own problem. Undersize it and it regenerates nightly, wasting salt and water and wearing out the valve. The point of measuring is to land in the middle.

Do I need a soft-water loop?

It helps a lot. Many Valley homes were plumbed with one — a capped pair of pipes in the garage waiting for a softener. If yours has one, installation is straightforward. If not, we can still do it, and the quote will say what the extra plumbing costs.
